Having worked specifically with postnatal women for over a decade, time and again I have seen how little time mothers are able invest in their own wellbeing, yet how vital it is for their mental health and resilience. Many coming and beginning therapy with me after months of struggle and internal turmoil. Overwhelming emotions that could potentially be avoided with a little bit of education, reflection and self compassion. As a mother of three myself, I understand on a deeply personal level the urge to put yourself last and how this can be detrimental to how we transition into our motherhood identity.
Just as we carefully care for ourselves in pregnancy and prepare for birth, we also need to invest energy into understanding matrescence - the profound emotion, physical and psychological transition into motherhood. Even a few minutes of daily self-care and education can reduce the risk of postnatal depression and anxiety. Just a few minutes of reflection/self-care can lay the foundation for a calmer, more confident start to motherhood.
As a clinical hypnotherapist, counsellor, and EMDR practitioner specialising in perinatal mental health, I’ve supported hundreds of women through this journey. My work has been featured on television, I’ve had the privilege of meeting members of the Royal Family to discuss the importance of support for mothers during this time and I’ve contributed my expertise on national boards and advisory groups dedicated to maternal wellbeing.
